Natural dyeing and yarn shopping in Oswestry

November 28, 2019 rowansewsLeave a comment

About a month ago I went to stay with family in Oswestry, and whilst I was there I partook in several yarn themed activities. Day One: Firstly, I went to Ewe and Ply, a small and lovely yarn shop. The staff were so friendly, and they even gave me a goodie bag on my way… Continue reading Natural dyeing and yarn shopping in Oswestry

First five days of my @lottieknits mini skein advent calendar!🎉 Every five skeins are designed to go together, and this first set is so beautiful! • •I love how they're not just different shades of the same colour, the colour sequence is much more imaginative than that. You can tell that a lot of thought has gone into how they work as a set, for example how the middle skein has tiny flashes of orange in it that lead perfectly into the next skein. Can't wait to unwrap the next set! ✨🌈
A while ago I went on a natural dyeing workshop, and I finally got some decent photos of my yarn! I love how they all go together and form a beautiful autumnal rainbow🍂🌈 • •I've just written a blog post with step by step photos, so if you're interested the link is in my bio😊 • •Still haven't decided what to make with them, so pattern suggestions are welcome! The yarn is Cascade fingering 220✨
Some closeup photos of the beret from my #dresslikeacrayon post!🖍 • •For this beret (my third #salutcheriberet) I held @knittingforolive heavy merino and silky mohair together to give the hat a slight halo. I also used a slightly different colour of each yarn, which creates an almost iridescent effect that I love!✨🍂
Does this count as #dresslikeacrayon? 🍂🖍 • •Wearing a @frenchnavynow_ #stellantee hacked into a dress, made with jersey I bought in Copenhagen, and a #salutcheriberet, also made with yarn from Copenhagen! Both souvenirs from a lovely holiday☺️
#BPsewvember day 7: Plans • •For the past year or so I've had lots of time to sew, but that's completely changed in the last month. Now I have less time I'm trying to plan my projects more carefully, to make sure they're things I'll (hopefully) wear for years to come. • •Some tools I've found helpful: the @seamworkmag Design Your Wardrobe series, which takes you from making a moodboard (my favourite part!) all the way to planning out individual projects. • •Once I'd used Design Your Wardrobe to decide exactly what to make, I uploaded my drawings to the app Stylebook so I could put them into outfits. I'd already uploaded all my existing clothes as I use the app a lot anyway, so I was able to combine my drawings with photos of what I already owned! (See second slide) This method is so much easier than drawing out the outfits manually, because you don't have to draw the same items of clothing over and over again. • •I might do a blog post going through the whole planning process in more detail, so stay tuned!✨👗
#BPsewvember day 6: View • •I've kind of fallen off the wagon with this challenge, but better late than never I guess! My view of sewing has changed a lot lately. When I first started sewing I was aiming to have a 100% me made wardrobe. Now, I'm realising that sewing new clothes isn't necessarily the most sustainable option. Where possible I'm trying to buy second hand clothes before I make something new, and I'm trying to work out new ways of wearing the clothes that I already own. • •The photos are of an amazing 1970s dress I found in a charity shop- it only cost £10! It makes me feel like a cross between Wednesday Addams and one of the Weird Sisters! ✨🍂
